The video appears to be damning: a white police officer fatally shooting a black man in the back as he ran away.
The shooting of Walter Scott by North Charleston, S.C., police Officer Thomas Stager has generated national outrage. Stager has been fired and charged with murder.
Legal and police tactics experts said the video would be powerful evidence in the criminal case. But they say it still leaves Stagers defense with options.
One likely defense focus will be what is not on the video. The interaction between Scott and Stager before the shooting is not seen, nor is the traffic stop that began the incident. Defense attorneys will probably push on this, the experts said, telling jurors that the video doesnt tell the whole story.
What was the conversation and interaction between the officer and the subject? said retired Los Angeles police Capt. Greg Meyer. Why did the subject run away?

“Excluding war efforts, only cowards shoot someone in the back.”
So it’s more on principle or machismo than just plain common sense. To not be a coward one should take the chance of
the known violent criminal getting away and possibly killing
some one in their flight. Would you be willing to let someone
go that has the full potential as a fugitive in flight from
justice go because you think it’s cowardly to try to stop them. In your words all a criminal would have to do is
keep his back to the fuzz and no one would shoot him.
Don’t glom on my use of the word fuzz either. Would you
let a known criminal with an outstanding warrant and a
history of violent crime possibly get away and do more
harm. Don’t get me wrong I agree with you to a point,
but there are times when there is a chance someone else
could get hurt or killed even during the pursuit or when
cornered he could grab a hostage.
Just off hand, who do you blame for all the wetbacks
in America? The government or the criminal employers
who hire them?
I surmised, based on his record, that there was a warrant involved, but haven’t seen the reports. Do you happen to have a source at hand?
Well, I am glad you understand me...because I certainly do not understand you and I have no idea how a bunch a lynch-mob, cop-haters like you guys even get on a blog like this. Go do your dirty work at the DU. Trolls are not welcome here.
Exactly! Maybe the guy was about to car-jack a little old lady. Sounds like was desperate enough.
What is that object that the cop throws behind him before he shoots, and what is the other object laying on the ground?
LOL, be quiet, brat.
Freerepublic is not a blog.
The driver’s family stated so in an interview the other day. It is one of the many youtubes from the news casts that are on youtube now showing the shooting vid.
There have been several other reports since, but I do not remember where I read them (BBC report may be one of them).
Thank you for that insight...it is a place where law-abiding folks discuss rational ideas, so I suppose that hurts your ears.
Thanks.
The murder part is fully on the video.
Is the cop going to claim it was a revenge killing for something we didn’t see?
This thread is absurd!
.
I don’t know, i am curious about those objects as well. I have watched the video about 20 times or so, and it seems to start right there, so I cannot get a good look at what is going on.
That being said, the rest of the video seems to show that the officer’s life was not in danger at the time he fired, nor was anyone else’s.
“What is that object that the cop throws behind him before he shoots, and what is the other object laying on the ground?”
I do not know, do you?
Not per se, but if the enemy was running away they didn't necessarily stop shooting. I'm sure it was not common but in the heat of battle (which this cop shooting was not) it happened and I doubt anyone felt bad about doing it.
You could have just thanked me for educating you on the fact that FR is not a blog, as you thought it was.
What did the cop drop in the video, and what did he go back to pick it up and then drop by the body.
So far everyone, including the cops, seem to think it was the taser that you think was dropped by the driver.
Perhaps someone will comment on what kind of crime scene the body would have been, and why a cop would drop anything into the middle of it.
