That, and make it where the ground crew can either secure or open the cockpit door.

hell, I say but biosensors into the controls. If someone who isn’t flight crew takes control without ground crews permission, seal the cockpit, fill it with a gas that will immobilize the occupants, and land the plane remotely. Have it so that if the systems that connect the ground crews with the air crews are lost, the plane will land itself at a particular predetermined GPS point.

Not a smart card—they’re usually 32/64/128 KB in size: just enough to hold encryption keys, subscriber auth data (one set for each net type: GSM, UMTS, LTE), network ID lists, tying a network code to a human-readable name (i.e. 310-260 - VoiceStream Wireless, 310-410 - Cingular, &c.), 30 SMS messages of 160 bytes each, and ~100 contacts...

The Bild is being somewhat inconsistent...of course it’s a Secure Digital card...

I heard the editor to Germany’s Bild News, who saw the video, said it was the most horrible thing he ever watched in his lifetime. The video appears to be taken from the rear of the passenger compartment, possibly by a cell phone, and shows absolute panic as the passengers on board were aware of the crisis. Passengers are reported to be crying out to God in numerous languages and shouting throughout the video.

I have theorized it was a copy of EgyptAir 990 where the pilot, Gameel Al-Batouti, took 217 people down to their deaths yelling over and over, “Tawkalt ala Allah” (”I rely on God”). Some dispute the motive of this murder suicide, but reasonable people would conclude it was inspired by religious motives.

Because it easier to use the mental health issue for Germanwings Flight 9525 co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, if there were an Islamic motivation it is completely off the table. The reason I suspect an Islamic connection is the taking of a large number people with the act of suicide. That is so much the modus operandi for the suicide murderers associated with the Islamic extremists. It certainly was the motivation for EgyptAir 990 pilot, Gameel Al-Batouti. If anything, it was a copy cat suicide.

Leave the cockpit door unlocked.

Upon boarding, issue every passenger one of the small baseball bats that truckers use to "Thump" their tires. If any individual or group tries to hijack the aircraft, the passengers have at least an equal vote.

Lufstanza and the authorities (gub mints) including the insurance company will do their best to squelch this video.

Protocols can certainly be developed that would minimize the chances of a ground crew hijacking an aircraft remotely. For instance, make sure at least two completely random separate control centers agree on the takeover simultaneously.

Nothing in our lives is certain, but we base our actions on realities, not absolute certainties. The technology exists to greatly reduce these kinds of tragedies. I say we use it to its greatest potential without losing focus on the human element as well.

Such events are exceedingly rare. There are about a million people airborne _right_now_, and at any given time. You’re talking about _one_ flight going down this way once per decade, working out to roughly a 1 in 22,000,000 chance of a passenger dying from suicidal airbus pilot. At some point, the returns for implementing anti-terrorism (indistinguishable from human subjugation) technology are so vanishingly small and so outrageously expensive that, truly, it’s better to spend the money somewhere else.

Way more people will die today from auto accidents alone than died on the Germanwings crash. Yet...you’re not prioritizing accordingly. Yes, the technology exists to mitigate such incidents - I say we apply the money & tech somewhere else where far more lives will be saved & prolonged.

Remember: a non-locking door and an armed passenger could have saved that flight. That’s a whole lot easier & cheaper than all the anti-terrorist protocols & tech we’ve wasted since the days cockpits didn’t have doors and passengers could CCW on board.

>> Pee in a can, if necessary <<

No cans needed. Just install what in the old days was called a “pilot relief tube.”

A French reporter on Greta last night had spoken to two correspondents who had seen the video, which was horrifying.

If technology could prevent another 9/11, or the crash of the Malaysian Air flight, or this Germanwing tragedy, I think it's worth it. I have a close friend who is a commercial pilot, and he has told me that most aircraft can already be flown from the ground. With a few tweaks and a solid emergency protocol, I think the industry could effectively eliminate these kinds of nightmares, with comparatively little additional expense.

A non-locking door and armed passengers could expose air travelers to even MORE risk, if the door couldn't be locked against a hijacker's intrusion and the arms were being borne by terrorists. That's no solution.

“There should , at times , be more tangible evidence of an active and engaged living God”.

Oh come on Leo. The sun rises and sets daily as ordained in the beginning, and speaking of all the other “issues” how do you suppose God is to judge man if man never does wrong? There are earthly and eternal consequences to wrong doing, and for God to undue all that in the name of Leo’s vision of life, would go against every principle of man’s agency and God’s plan.

“Yet we just suffer and die tragically” as if the Savior of mankind was NOT called upon to do the same for us? We are here to live life as best we can while we can, and follow in Jesus footsteps. We all are destined to die, how when where is perhaps known, but not by us.

Not bad, as long as there is better, El Al style screening of passengers. Because the 9/11 planes had 10 thumbs willing to bring a plane down....

He told his employer and they cleared him to fly! I don’t know what the liability laws in Europe, France or Germany are, but they are so screwed it is unbelievable. 150 people dead because they didn’t ground a pilot who told them he was suicidal.

I’ve been away from this story for a couple days. Is this for real, he TOLD Lufthansa that he was suicidal, and they LET him fly this plane??????? What a law suit, what a lawsuit. OMG. Families lost their high schoolers... I wouldn’t care about the money if my kid were on the plane, I’d just want to finish that airline off.

There has to be a way for passengers to get in there, just saying.

Even with 10, it would be hard for all 5 terrorists to be at the door fighting off all the passengers at the same time.

I put myself in the situation of the trapped & doomed passengers , calling out for all my soul is worth , in God’s name , moments before everything around me and my own body explodes into utter destruction . Where is the promise ? John 14:13 , Matt 21:22 , Luke 11:9 . I would love to stand on God’s Word , but it’s also a two way street . I truly believe , if God/Jesus is my friend and savior , it’s ok for me to ask Him ‘why?’ And I do . Respectfully , of course . Just remember , the Lord loved Thomas too ....

My solution to hijacking:

1) require everyone boarding the plane to eat a piece of bacon
2) everyone is issued a gun as they board
3) everyone fly naked
