Short on dismal news? Have a look at this notice, taped to the counter at the Yankee Tavern on 161st Street in the Bronx.
Due to the increased price of pastrami, it began, unpromisingly, we at the Yankee Tavern apologize for the increase in prices for the pastrami items.
Pastrami is in crisis.
I contemplated taking it off the menus, Joe Bastone, owner of the tavern, said. I came very close to doing it. I decided to try passing it on.

It’s got to be on seeded Jewish Rye with Swiss cheese, a slice of heaven indeed
Just came back from 5 guys and you’re making me hungry again, LOL
That sandwich reminds me of the NYC prankster who stopped at his favorite deli with a pound of pastrami in his coat pocket from another deli.
He ordered a pastrami sandwich & then added the smuggled pastrami. The result was half a foot high.
“What a wonderful sandwich!!” he exclaimed when the deli owner came by his table.
The owner turned ghostly pale & charged into the kitchen screaming & throwing plates.
;^)
When I got the gift card last Christmas it included several free upgrades but the price was still extremely high.
As luck would have it, I got a mailer in the mail along with ads from several other companies. I got to looking at it and I had paid just about exactly twice what their mail offer was and that was after the upgrades.
I phoned and asked for replacement or at least get the same deal they offered everyone else. Their warranty which I had never used, simply said they would either replace or refund for any reason at all.
They refused to do anything and eventually offered me a $10 coupon which would have been worthless.
One of the worst customer service operations I have ever dealt with and I will never deal with them again. I also intend to tell everyone I can to not deal with them either.
I did a bit of research on the internet and found that my experience was typical. Apparently at one time they were much better but they have always been way over priced.
Right. Think of all the economic inputs dependent on pastrami.
this is yet another Obama attack on Jews
and if ANYTHING can get them to re-examine their (2/3 or higher, anyway) support for Obama,
raising the price of their pastrami WILL DO IT!!!!
“in spades!”
All those FRers who’ve been wondering, or wailing about the high level of Jewish (or, perhaps more accurately, JINO) support for Obama.....just watch now!
a huge defection is about to occur!
Obama has started the Eschatological Pastrami War — and its one battle he cannot win!

All cold cuts are too expensive any more. Even shaved chopped ham, better known to native Burghers as “chipped ham”, is too expensive to eat more than occasionally.
Omaha is overpriced, even on sale.
I did not like the Omaha steaks I had. They had, like, no texture. They were literally like butter. I guess I could see how people would like that, but I did not.
We get excellent meat at Costco, you can even get prime there. It’s worth the price of admission for the meat and the coffee.
I spent a lot of time in NYC on business. Ate a lot of pastrami at the Carnegie Deli....Man oh man..Cole Slaw, a Kosher Dill on the side. (not a fan of Russian Dressing) Maybe an order of fries to go with it and a Coke to wash it down.
But you really shouldn’t have it with the cheese, that’s not Kosher! Brown mustard a must also.
I totally agree. It's on the FReeper boycott list but I'm a renegade.
Just remembering dealing with them has gotten my blood pressure up. I mean I am still really angry with them.
YUMMY!!! Down here in South Florida can’t get anything near like what I would GLADLY pay again $18 for that delicious hot pastrami sandwich from Carnegie, Wolf’s or Katz delis - and the endless bowls of garlic and dill pickles at every table - again I say YUMMY!!!
Someone gave us a gift of their products for Christmas. We had a problem with one tenderloin steak, which was tough and had a line of gristle in it. Customer service immediately sent us a replacement package of 2 steaks with no hassle. I do acknowledge that there are other companies who sell better product, but this product has been OK and customer service responded promptly and generously to our problem. Of course the other companies with the better meat is much more expensive.
Wolfie’s and the Rascal House are Gone With The Wind.
Yes, that is the “other company” I was referring to in my earlier post. Their steaks are the best!
And WAY OUT of my price range. For a minimum of $55/a pound they better be good! That's absolutely ridiculous!
Not to worry on the kosher thing, never have been.....and yes the spicy brown mustard is an absolute requirement. Just the thought of it is making me hungry.
