It is a macabre choice to make - and almost unique to some inmates on Utah's death row: would you be injected with toxic chemicals, or shot in the heart?
But, amid cries of outrage against the southwestern state bringing death by firing quad back into law, almost half of those due to die that way have picked the punishment themselves.
Ron Lafferty, who slit the throats of his sister-in-law and her baby daughter in 1984, is one of three who has opted to die by the bullet.
Two others in Utah's eight-strong death row have made the same choice, the Los Angeles Times reported - though it is not clear who they are.
The recent change in Utah's execution law revived the firing squad as a back-up method, in case no lethal injection drugs are available
It was outlawed in 2004, before which time inmates such as Lafferty had been able to choose between the two.

Death by firing squad is probably less painful.
Having an IV needle stuck in one’s arm is painful, and the discomfort is continuous once the needle is in place. Firing squad stops the heart instantly; unconsciousness and death follow quickly.
Not that I care too much about the comfort of murderers, but it seems a top concern of anti-death penalty zealots. As far as I’m concerned, murderers are only entitled to as much comfort as they gave their victims.
Begging your pardon, but I don't think so. I believe the brain lives on after the blood stops flowing for some time. Maybe those choosing shooting vs the sleep-to-death don't realize that.
It works every time.
No use fooling oneself about injection. Injection allows the onlookers to convince themselves that the condemned man doesn’t suffer. There is no blood with injection. The illusion is that he goes to sleep.
Firing squad is fast and efficient. It was predictable that the left would object to it because they are against anything having to do with a gun.
Stop the rhetoric and get ‘er done before odumbo puts another ban on ammunition. No doubt it will be a lot cheaper and much faster than lethal injections anyway, one rifle and one bullet will do just fine.
“Let’s do it.”
(Gary Gilmore’s last words.)
So shoot 'em in the brain.
What do you want on your tombstone?
Utah firing squads use .30-30 rifles. I would think the impact of several of these soft point bullets slamming into the heart at close range would instantly shut down consciousness due to hydrostatic shock.
Whatever, doesn’t matter. It’s straightforward and effective 100% of the time.
Pepperoni...
I apologize for my lack of clarity. They do indeed deserve death, but the death they deserve is not a reasonably painless one, considering what they did to victims.
There is a deeper meaning here. Lethal injection is felt by many to be dehumanizing, making a person die like an animal instead of a human being, even if they are a murderer.
Granted, socialists intensely dislike the death penalty for criminals, for myriad bizarre, twisted reasons, preferring instead to slaughter the helpless with abortion and euthanasia. But in their case it *always* contains a strong element of dehumanization. Children in the womb aren’t humans, but just tissue; and the elderly and incapacitated are just disposable, like trash.
Socialists hate individuality, and want people to become generic, gray things, seeing the conformity of the herd of sheep, or even a hive of bees, as preferable to looking at their face in the mirror and seeing what an utter failure they are as people.
Even a savage murderer, facing his death upright, be it by hanging or firing squad, is a human being first, an individual, and thus better than any number of socialists.
Certainly he may be hated by society and those who he has killed and their families, but his real judgment is yet to come, and not for other people to make.
Justice can only demand his life, not his humanity. His life should be enough.
line them up, lets roll
A better death than getting your throat slit.
meanwhile, another death row inmate in California died, of natural causes.
Go Utah!
I sincerely believe it would be HUGELY rated and parents would make tehir kids watch to teach them what happens if you choose a life of crime.
On a funnier note, it might encourage some profoundly brain dead celebrities to volunteer for execution just for the sake of massive amounts of publicity. I’m sure they really ARE that stupid.
You’re both right. It’s the same with the eyes of the Manson women, of Tex Watson, all of them are so empty and there’s something about them that is just dead. Drained out. It’s the only way to explain WHY people who don’t have any reason to realistically kill someone. It’s the same instinct healthy people have over people who seem normal, but end up showing themselves to be maniacs later on.
Nostalgic baby boomers?
That’s what I was thinkin’ — closed casket.
Hard to say if a guy isn’t on the hot seat himself.
But I think that’s how I would want it if I had to choose.
Yeah.
