A tropical cyclone killed at least six people in Vanuatu, UNICEF said Saturday, confirming first casualties from one of the most powerful storms ever to make landfall.
Hardly a tree stood straight after Tropical Cyclone Pam bellowed across the Pacific island nation.
Aid workers fear many more fatalities. The confirmed deaths came only from the capital, Port Vila.
Only a little information has so far trickled out from areas outside the capital, but Sune Gudnitz, regional head for U.N. aid agency OCHA told CNN from Fiji, about 600 miles away, that he fears the worst.

Evidently the population is not dense enough to cause the island to capsize.
My favorite island in that area is the famous test site for upsidaisium, the infamous “No Bikini Atoll”.
My sons were supposed to leave, for a surfing trip, to Fiji on Thursday evening. This trip had been planned for months. They’re very disappointed but fortunately had trip insurance which has reimbursed them the entire amount.
When i saw this on the news, my first thought was "How much is this going to cost us?" and who are the half dozen people in the Country that even have a clue as to where this is located?
Seriously? Who doesn't know where they are say within a southern quandrant of the Pacific Ocean. Did you never take geography? Never look at a globe?

I would much rather help these folks — good people clearly in distress — than continue the billions of dollars of routine transfer payments to corrupt governments and corporate welfare that goes on now.
Oh, I’ve got nothing against these folks and I’m sure they need help, and I agree about the transfer payments. It’s just with $18 TRILLION in debt, it would be nice if Uncle Sugar for once started a trend and directed them to the UN relief agencies that we pay $Billions annually to support and who, ostensibly, should handle this.
