I’ve always found that “Scary or Horror” films are so contrived that there is nothing frightful about them.

Agreed. I used to like a good, well plotted, horror movie then the slasher movies kind of took over and I always hated them. The last horror movie that I recall liking was "The Ring". That movie about the Godzilla like monster from outer space which you watch entirely through one of the character's video camera was also pretty good but I consider that more of a science fiction movie.

Yeah. Something that can take any form and can catch you no matter what? Only a Deus Ex Machina can save you.

"Ive always found that Scary or Horror films are so contrived that there is nothing frightful about them." Yes. Like the GEICO ad. --"A group of kids are running from a murderer in the middle of the woods when they stumble upon an old cabin. Lets hide in the attic. No, in the basement. One woman starts breaking down into tears Why cant we just get in the running car?! She is dismissed as crazy Are you crazy?! Lets hide behind the chainsaws.

I agree. Many are so "over-the-top" that they are almost comical. Too me, a great horror movie would be one which begins in a state of complete normalcy, and gradually very subtle, strange things - trivial things, at first - begin to happen. This would progress until it was indubitable that something horrific was unfolding. Kind of like what's going on in this country right now.
