Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi on Thursday launched budget smartphone Redmi 2, the successor to its affordable Redmi 1S, in India today priced at Rs 6,999.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 will directly compete with the newly-launched Moto E 2nd Gen which also carries a similar price tag.

The 4.7- inch dual 4G device is powered by 64-bit Quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 processor and has 1GB RAM, 8GB Flash (expandable to 32GB) and a 2200mAh battery, which is 10 per cent more than the Redmi 1S. The Cortex A53 CPU and Adreno 306 GPU on Redmi 2 offer 30 per cent faster browsing speeds and an overall 50 per cent higher CPU performance compared to Redmi 1S.

Redmi 2 comes with Android 4.4-based ‎MIUI 6 operating system and features 8MP rear camera and 2 MP front camera with selfie timer. The device has 1280 x 720 HD screen (312 PPI) and a fully laminated screen display that brings the pixels much closer to the surface, removing gap between glass and LCD.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 will be available exclusively on Flipkart on March 24 with registration. The company also announced that a limited edition 2GB RAM and 16GB Flash version will also be available shortly.

What does “Xiaomi” mean in English?

Xiaomi means “millet,” which is a grain that is staple of diets in various parts of the world.

How is “Xiaomi” pronounced

This can be a tough one. The name sounds phonetically like “SHEE-ow me,” but that is an anglicized way to pronounce it.

Here are a couple buttons from pronunciation website Forvo with examples of how to say “Xiaomi.”

I’ve been looking at their phones for some time. The note for me would be my choice. Whatever I get needs 4G.

The sad question is do you buy the American brand made in China, or the Chinese brand made in China?
