Just an historical fact. The winter of 1887-88 was one of the coldest on record. It was similar to this winter. It culminated in the Blizzard of 1888 which occurred in the second week of March after some warming had occurred. Hundreds died.

My great-grandfather lost most of the cattle on his Wyoming ranch in the Blizzard of 1888.
