Well, the hills really were alive at the Oscars tonight.
Sorry, but we had to. Amazingly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, and the Oscars decided to pay tribute in a big way. Things kicked off with a speech by Scarlett Johansson in which she praised the film for its five academy awards (including Best Picture), and made a few "problem like Maria" jokes.
Then none other than Lady Gaga emerged onstage to sing a compilation of the movie's best songs. Rumors had been floating around that the singer was going to be paired with the tribute, and she even hinted at what was to come on the red carpet, telling E!'s Ryan Seacrest of her impending performance, "I really have put my heart into preparing for it."
Gaga went on to give a heartfelt performance of some of our favorite tunes from The Sound of Music, starting off with, naturally, "The Hills Are Alive," and then transitioning into "My Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss" before ending on a very high note with "Climb Every Mountain." It was certainly different than the Lady Gaga jams we know and love, but it was great to see her really show off her vocals. Clearly we're not alone in our admiration, as the singer got a major standing ovation from the audience.
And, of course, since this is Lady Gaga, she surprised us with a huge surprise guest: Fraulein Maria herself, Julie Andrews! The legendary actress appeared at the end of the performance to give Gaga a huge embrace, and then say a few words on her work in The Sound of Music before introducing the award for Best Original Score.
"Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute," said Andrews. "It really warmed my heart. It's hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since that joyous film was released. I blinked and then suddenly here I am. I think that I do speak for everyone connected with the movie when I say we all really felt blessed to have been a part of it. And as for me, well, how lucky can a girl get?"
You said it, Julie.
She has said since the beginning that she knew that shock value was very limited and her career would have to change over time.
She’s a smart cookie then.
love the voice but can’t stand the person (GaGa)...
RE: dressed like that, it is not a tribute but an insult
C’mon give the lady ( OK in real life she ain’t ) some slack...
Many forget Lady Gaga is a really, really talented singer. Her classmates in New York City ( where she grew up ) attests to it ( many do not believe this, but she attended Catholic School — The Convent of the Sacred Heart, where she performed many Broadway shows ).
Maybe its the wigs and the crazy outfits that defined her through the years of her earlier performances. Maybe its the meat dresses and the being carried in an egg and all that blood. Whatever it is, people seem to have forgotten that first and foremost Gaga is an insanely talented singer. But they remembered tonight.
And the flashiest part of her performance was some skirt swishing ( as you said, dressed like that... HA HA ).
Last night about 8:30pm PST, I commented here on FR how great was Lady Gaga’s tribute to Julie Andrews at the Academy Awards - that I had no idea what her voice sounded like - - -
Also the sad fact that Julie Andrew’s voice has suffered (due to botched surgery some years ago).
I’m glad Andrews was there (to present an Oscar) and went onstage and joined Lady Gaga - classy.
Just as Madonna proved to us in Evita. All the talent was there to have had a classy yet successful career.
But in each case they chose to slut it up.

I bought Tony Bennett’s CD where he’s paired with her. I’ve played it for friends, asking them to name the female vocalist singing with Tony. Not one person, not one person has guessed her.
She’s really amazing.
I take my hat off to her. She is not Madonna look alike, and in fact Madonna is so far inferior as a singer it’s not even worth arguing.
Madonna was always more of a dancer who sang.
I didn’t know that about McDonna. I didn’t know that she had much musical talent.
Didn’t see the show, but based on those pics, looks like Gaga actually dressed decently.
Yes, except for the tatoo.
“Didnt know that she could really sing like that...”
Me neither. She was fantastic, I couldn’t believe what a great singer she really is. And she looked so, so NORMAL.
I hope she sings like this all the time now.
And Julie Andrews too! I love her so much. I’m not a big celebrity lover, but Julie Andrews I do truly love.
It was just a wonderful surprise all around. Thanks for posting this thread and letting me gush!
I am no fan of hers but she had the pipes to sing those songs. The tats on her arms and back though clashed with her dress.
Gimmicky, IMHO.
I immediately stopped working on my computer to go in the tv room to find out who this person with the magnificent voice was.
Lady Gaga. She also looked very beautiful in her flowing white gown. I sat there mesmerized. Unbelievable.
I knew very little about Lady Gaga before the Academy Awards show. I saw her a few times singing on late-night talk shows. That was about it. I think I remember seeing her with weird colored hair.
Anyway, I was tremendously impressed by her wonderful voice and how pretty she looked.
Well, that's all I have to say.
Thanks for this, it is wonderful; and, unfortunately, I am beginning to relate all to well.
I too loved Julie Andrews until she did a NUDE scene!! Directed by her husband.....YUK!
