They are delicate flowers.

Flowers don't beat you over the head with words when they are upset : )

Back in a while, I have to go to the grocer to shop, put the food on and do laundry.

No woman to tell “make me a sammitch!”

Surely I can fix this via SDK, but there should be a simple reset to baseline.

There’s no difference whether you choose “Exit”, “Shutdown” or “Reboot” options from the XBMC shutdown menu?

Oooh, bummer! Well, that passes my limited knowledge of the subject! I've run XBMC on Windows PC's, on Linux, and with OpenELEC on rasberry pi, but I've always been able to either secure shell into the OS, or exit XMBC and drop to the OS interface.

Having never run XBMC on Android, I am just tossing out ideas, but I did see the following “XBMC can launch other Android apps by going to “Programs” (on the home screen) and selecting the app you want to run.”

Perhaps there is an App available that will let you access the settings you need?

There is also an Android-specific forum for support of XBMC/Kodi

http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=164

Perhaps someone there might be more helpful in getting you unstuck.
