Your argument idea — reminds me of our much missed mini poodle. If my wife and I argued, the poodle would growl at me and my much louder voice.

My husband and I got loud with each other the other day about directions to a certain store. We retired here and are still somewhat unfamiliar with the area except MY sense of direction is much better than his. We were looking at a map of the area as the internet was down due to a storm.
The cat started howling and ended up under the kitchen table peering out at us....I was surprised at that reaction. I suppose if the cat had been a pit bull we would have gladly told the respective spouse, he/she was absolutely right and just left the house in search of the store.
My husband flew for years so his navigation skills were excellent in the air but on the ground, something else!! Well, I guess age plays a part also. In that case, glad he gave up flying!
