What’s noble about protecting a serial rapist “when he’s down”? If Murphy’s reasoning had been that Cosby’s crimes were not a laughing matter and that the victims need to be respected, that would have been completely different. This rationale to me is offensive.

A person can still intend that their motives be "noble" -- yet, as you mention, still have their sense of "protection" misplaced.
