Pope Francis recently proclaimed that it is okay for parents to spank their children if their dignity is respected. That lamentable statement is as naive as it is injurious. Especially at a time when our beleaguered world has been experiencing countless outrageous forms of violence, his regrettable words do little to quell such tragic acts and may even add fuel to the fire. Our world has more than enough hitting. Why anyone, however well intentioned, would wish to do anything to increase it defies reason.
Regarding spanking (however one may choose to define it), Edward Lee Thorndike, the Columbia University behaviorist, about a century ago proclaimed that spanking stamps in what it purports to stamp out. Sigmund Freud stated, also a century ago, that this will be a verbal world, not a physical one, and if I am wrong it will not make any difference. We should heed the wisdom of those century-old teachings.
Parents hit because their words have failed, and when parents words have failed, the parents have failed.

Commies trying to eliminate all forms of violence as being possible responses against government tyranny. If you want to worry about violence against children, worry about the violence done to someone who was never disciplined as a child to established acceptable limits of social behavior.
Violence is a virtue when it strikes against tyrannical government that does not respect individual property and rights. There are quite of few I could name that are now in the news, but communists and Nazis are good examples from the past . . . and present.
Yup. We all know that when people used to whip their children, those children grew up to all be thugs and western civilization collapsed because parents and teachers used to spank bratty, disobedient, children. /s
thats a great shot!
What an ass?
Think of it as rebooting a computer that is acting up. Just hit the ‘spank’ key:)
Wow, I am blown over. For once in a blue moon, Pope Francis has said something that this Catholic agrees with.
