Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joe B. Mauldin, a bass player for Buddy Holly and The Crickets, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 74...

Oh man I can’t believe it, I’m a Buddy Holly fanatic. I was just talking the other day with some people how I been listening to the guy since I was a kid, since the 1960s and 1970s and to this day I still find songs of his I never heard before, the bands output was nothing short of phenomenal and Hollys pro recording career only last a year and a half!!!!!
Here’s one song I discovered a few weeks ago I never heard before, it’s amazing and of course right away I loved it.

And Bobby Fuller recorded in West Texas and covered several songs by the Crickets (I Fought The Law, Love’s Made A Fool Of You).
A lengthy biography has been written recently with his brother (who was also in the band).

I always thought Waylon Jennings played bass during this time. I know he was the bass player at the time of the crash. Maybe I’m confused.
No. You’re right. Waylon did play bass toward the end.
Buddy Holly And Waylon Jennings
"In late 1958, Hollys band, the Crickets, needed a temporary bass player for their tour and they turned to Jennings. Besides Holly, the tour also included Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson)."
(snip
"After a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly decided to charter a small plane for his band (consisting of himself, Tommy Allsup (guitar) and Jennings.Ritchie Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin for the last seat, Valens won and took Allsups seat. Since the Big Bopper was sick, he asked Jennings if he could take his seat on the plane. Jennings said that as long as Holly was okay with it, he was too. When Holly found out Jennings was not going to be on the plane, he jokingly told him, I hope your ol bus freezes up! Jennings responded back, I hope your plane crashes! Those words would haunt Jennings for decades."
The original Crickets left at a point (it’s even covered in the Gary Busey film) but there were plans to get back together.
Thank you; that article connects a lot of dots.
