Having seen the pictures on Breaking News, I’m relieved it wasn’t much worse. Prayers for the injured and the families of the dead.

Some idiot must have driven around the crossing gate.

Very sad story, and Westchester is my old stomping grounds. It’s where I grew up. I know the area in question.

Moslem suicide/homocide. First thing that comes to mind.

Great... expect the nanny state to ramp up more regulation demanding active fire protection on all passenger coaches. It's for the sake of the children.

Authorities ruled out terrorism shortly before the collision took place.

That location looks like a disaster waiting to happen. The railroad crossing is right next to a traffic signal where the road intersects the Taconic State Parkway. I wonder if traffic stopped at the red light queues up across the railroad tracks.

It’s a very crowded, congested area with poorly laid-out roads. Quaint, actually.
I wonder whether the heavy snow from the two recent storms may have been a factor.

If this link works, it shows the street view at the location where the side road crosses the tracks right next to the Taconic Parkway ...

Wonder if the car or engine end of the train hit the vehicle. Looks like massive smoke inhalation with the fire.

Thanks for the helpful link

No doubt. I’ve seen people do this right in front of me at RR crossings and I say to myself, “You f**king idiot, are you that f’ing stupid’’?

“the car and the front end of the Metro-North train exploded almost immediately after impact.”
Reactive armor? A car packed with propane cylinders?
Takes a bit to blow up the front of a train.
