Word For The Day, Tuesday February 3, 2015
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
grok [grok]
-vt
1. to understand thoroughly and intuitively.
-vi
2. to communicate sympathetically.
[coined by Robert A. Heinlein in the science-fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land (1961)]
Have to admit, I wondered if your work would include “crock”.... ;^)
LOL! Barack and crock. Perfect together!
He’s pretty talented, musically. It’s hard to picture him as skeletor though...
Not possible in the Biblical sense. That kind intimacy is the devil’s domain.
OK, I am green with envy.
Fr. Brian just gave me a reprieve from teaching marriage. The young engaged couple will not make it to tonight’s class, so next week. We shall see, we shall see. Any words of wisdom that I should include?
Do you have a curriculum for it? I guess my only advice is to always but your spouse first.
At the Super Bowl, things ran amok
Where some Seahawks and Gronk did not grok.
Cooler heads did prevail,
Now it's back to the sale
Of the stuff from Nike & Reebok
Heinlein has been my favorite scifi writer since I started reading scifi as a kid-his novels were a part of what has made me an unrepentant rebel for life...
Obama is just unable to grok-
Others are merely his thralls
When asked about someone else
He mostly stammers and stalls
Even news of a brutal murder
Barely puts him off stride-
It is always all about him
No matter that someone died
After some lip service, Obama
Returns to the topic most dear-
Though someone was burned alive,
Obamacare is what you’ll hear...
I arrived home rained out of work, turned on the news and saw that Obama had made it all about him when he was told that Jordanian pilot had been murdered-probably because he had his scripted little commercial for healthcare going on and he was interrupted to do his JOB-I don’t remember being this disgusted with a pres since Nixon-not even Clinton...
I’ve no idea who that actress is, but she looks a lot like a prissy busybody ranch neighbor of ours when I was a kid-the bitch would call my mom and/or aunt every time we climbed onto the top of the wall around her citrus orchard and ran along it, teasing her scary, kid-hating bulldog-one of those bigger American ones, not an old English...
Just out of curiosity-did you ever read Heinlein’s Farnham’s Freehold? I first read it in my mid-teens and have read it several times since. It is like some parallel universe version of what goes on now-just picture Al Sharpton as the slutmaster character in the book-Memtok, I think-or Obama as the supposedly benevolent king...
That’s the character she played in a Harry Potter movie. She was very mean!
You really need to read the Harry Potter books. Excellent series.
I’ve read parts of a couple of the books, but I could not get interested at all. There are very few kids’ books I enjoy-my favorite two are Bradbury’s-Dandelion Wine and The Halloween Tree-then there is Charlotte’s Web.
Obama’s rise to power
Was nothing but a crock.
The hope and change mantra
The public didn’t really grok.
Six long years later
Disillusionment has taken hold
Obama fails to notice
He continues to be bold.
Tax and spend is a Dem ploy,
Wealth redistribution their goal
Weary tax payers are tired
It’s making their blood boil.
I knew I didn’t like her! The woman she resembles was one of those people who didn’t want anyone’s kids within 30 feet of her ranch gate and never shut up about it-her husband was off with the military, just like my dad and my uncle, making her a perfect target for brats like us.
Until we outgrew being monsters, we canoed up the creek and stole a duck from her, (but we got busted and let it go) climbed over that wall at night when the bulldog, Sergeant had gone indoors and picked oranges and tangerines from her trees, and one night we dropped down into the orchard, picked fruit fallen on the ground and threw it into the rain cistern she used to water the trees in the orchard. We all got a well deserved ass beating for that one...
Nope, I never read any Heinlein. Isn’t he the “Starship Troopers” guy?
Yes, that is one of Heinlein’s-my parents were both fans of his books-they turned me on to them.
