Friends of a Temple University freshman who fell eight stories to her death said a Facebook post just before her tragic fall hints that it may have been suicide.

Rebecca Kim, 18, was visiting two friends at a Rittenhouse Square apartment in Philadelphia when she leaned out the window to take pictures and tumbled to her death around 6 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Kim allegedly posted to her Facebook page just before her fatal fall: "It was intentional."

"It was shock, a lot of shock. I really didn't know how to react to it at first," classmate and friend Rachelle Newman told NBC Philadelphia. "I was sitting there frozen. I was like 'whoa.'"

They are human, and this is how they are dealing with the horror of the story.

Don't lump me in with humans!

One of my most vivid memories of living in Philly was the acrid graveside humor that circulated after every ghastly news story.

The jokes that were making the rounds among those of my age group (grad students and yuppies) after the Challenger explosion were too much even for me.

There was also a horrible accident in Philadelphia in 1981; a gasoline tanker truck exploded on the Schuylkill Expressway at rush hour, right next to the exit to Penn and Drexel. Dozens of people died horribly. The gallows humor was instantaneous and awful.

That was an exit I took nearly every day. It was only by the GOG that I wasn’t there that day.

I worked with vet of the Korean air force. He was kind of laid back and a joker but he and his wife put the usual pressure to succeed on their kids. The son went to West Point and the daughter went to Wharton. No suicides but I don’t think the kids especially enjoyed their academic success.

She was dedicated to perfection, typing, “It was unintentional” all the way to the ground.

Self-correcting spell-check changed her meme after the event.

Back in the day when I lived in the Philly Burbs, we thought the Schuylkill expressway was more parking than driving!

Instead of crying, they release by joking.

I understand what you are saying Laz but I don't agree anymore. I think there is a purveying attitude amongst society, and many folks here, who no longer care about human life just as long as it doesn't affect them personally or POLITICALLY.

I'd just as soon avoid these types of threads too Laz but I can't stand by and let many of the comments being said go without being met with my own personal outrage.......

absolutely bust their gut with a singular focus on high marks

I agree, 101%. The ones I feel really sorry for, are the children of immigrants. Their experiences line up, similar to what you describe, but they can’t possibly go home, to Mom and Dad, and articulate that message.

I worked with a Korean guy, moved here when he was done with school and military. I got to know him very well, one night, over drinks, I asked him why he defied the stereotype, and didn’t ride his kids hard, about school. He wasn’t easy on them, but he was flexible. Back home he used to cross a bridge, walking from his house, to school, and back. He lost count of the number of times he thought “Is today the day? I can end it all, if I just jump”.
He swore when he came to California, he would never subject his kids to that pressure.

Same could be said of 95, at least at certain times of day/year.

Or Route 1, or the Roosevelt Expressway, or 611, or 309, of Frankford Ave. You name it.

After living there three or four years, I got really good at getting anywhere I wanted to go without taking a major highway. All secondary thoroughfares. I couldn't do it today to save my life, though. Memory is one reason, another is that lots of things have changed in the last thirty years.

the usual pressure to succeed

There comes a point, what do you do with that success ? Not sure I know the answer, but I’ve met more than a few, who seemed to be model students, etc., but, as you say, didn’t enjoy it.

Okay, but your outrage is to this human response, as hands are to a waterfall. You won't win.

I understand your desire though.

....”I used to work with quite a few of these kids, and the intensity for them to succeed is unbelievable”....

Exactly what was my first thought...and not uncommon they will commit suicide. Even adults who fail somehow...like some of these airline pilots, and boat captains who wreck.

It is a culture thing.

Q: What do Christa McAuliffe and Donna Rice have in common?
A: They both went down on the challenger.
