A source within the NFL tells wthr.com's Bob Kravitz that the league is investigating the possibility that the Patriots deflated footballs in their 45-7 win over the Colts Sunday night.
The source told Kravitz that officials took a ball out of play at one point and weighed it.
A deflated football could potentially be easier to throw and catch in poor weather conditions than a properly inflated ball.

Didn’t both teams play in the same weather?
are you seriously that stupid? The article doesn’t say they cheated by changing the weather, it says they cheated by changing balls when they were on offense.
How much can air weigh?
does a slightly deflated ball weigh less than an inflated one?
I saw this report earlier. With all the national sports media there for the game, wonder why a league source would seek out a local Indianapolis writer?
If true, it will be interesting to see how a guy some already refer to as “Belicheater” will be dealt with by the league and media.
How is a improperly inflated ball going to weigh less than a properly inflated ball since air is weightless?
Whaaaaahhhh....the Pats won.....they must have cheated.
I don't think weighing the ball is the most accurate way to determine the pressure of air in it, but theoretically, the method will work.
An NFL ball is supposed to be inflated 12.5 - 13.5 PSI. Each team is responsible for providing game balls. Each team personnel can scuff the scrimmage balls. Balls for Kicking (”K Balls”) cannot be scuffed.
An under-inflated ball would certainly be easier for a RB to hang on to. To a point, an under-inflated ball would be easier for the QB to grip when wet, but if too under-inflated wouldn’t throw as well.

Just thinking out loud, maybe the (or another) suspicion was that the ball was not regulation weight (a separate consideration from how much air is in it). Regulation football has size, weight, and pressure limits.
I’d take it the OP’s suggestion that making it easier to grip ball in the poor weather would have helped the two teams equally—as they were both playing in cold weather. (And actually presumably Indy more, since they threw the ball for a far greater portion of their offense.)
Yes, and then after the referee checks the ball, then are then given to the home team’s ball attendent who maitinas custody as the balls are rotated in and out of play.
I’m not a Patriots fan, but how come fans of teams that lose to them always make these kinds of excuses?
Yeah.
Under-inflated balls. That’s why the Pats won by 38.
It has nothing to do with Luck’s overthrows/underthrows.
Just prior to the start of the game. Timing still makes it hard to figure out how they would tamper with them after that. I'm sure the Pats are loving this. It's the kind of mind game that will give the Seahawks pause.
The Colts had enough air, they just ran out of Luck
