I am assuming that "1000" means he qualified at 1000 yards. I was in the Marine Corps and we qualified from 200 yards, 300 and 500. I believe 500 yards was the furthest for any service, but not 100% sure.
Try looking it up at
Medals of America. You might also look at your FIL's DD214 (separation papers).

His separation papers only mention the CIB, sharpshooter, Purple Heart, WWII ETO, and other various medals. No mention of “1000” - that’s why I think it was an add-on.

Range at Parris Island has(had) a 600 and a 1000 yard firing line. Scuttlebutt was that when Marines used the Springfield 03, that they qualified from the 200, 300, 500, 600 and 1000 yard lines. They must have not done the rapid fire part of the course.
BTW, I saw two range instructors take M-1s at random and fired with one hand in standing position!
