When my middle son was a young teenager and too big for his britches, he got angry one day at his mom for her refusal to let him go on an unsupervised car trip with his buddies. He called her a couple of choice, profane four-letter words in return and I hauled off and smacked him so hard he landed on the floor. I told him in no uncertain terms, to never speak to his mother or me like that again. He stormed out of the house, jumped the alley fence and went to a friend's house, where, thinking he was "big stuff," he called the police on me.

Well, after speaking with our son, the police came over to our house, interviewed my wife and I and asked had I used a fist or open hand when I hit our son. I replied an open hand. The policeman left to return to talk to my son and told him he was very disrespectful to his mother, that he deserved what he got from me and he should learn to respect his parents.

We never heard a peep from our son about the incident after that. And he never disrespected his mother or I again.

I used to work for a guy who told me his father only hit him twice. Knocked him out cold both times and he said he deserved both.

Is there something in the LEO domestic dispute rules of engagement manual that tells them to ask about use of fist or open hand?
