Bottles of beer were stacked up and sold in the pissoirs, it being way too cold for putting lip to longneck in the stands. One got stuck to the glass, much as the referees on the field gave blood and skin when disengaging from their metal whistles.
I remember the Ice Bowl like it was yesterday. It’s the first football game I can remember watching. Sitting there watching the game with my little brother. He wanted the guys in green to win, so naturally I took the other team and became a life long Cowboys fan. Over the last half century, the Cowboys have provided plenty of both good and bad memories. Guess that is what rooting for a team is all about.
What’s worse than Jethro Pugh not being an All-Pro is that Packer’s Guard Jerry Kramer (who blew out Pugh to allow Starr to slide in behind him for the game winning QB sneak) isn’t in the HOF.
Not just for that one iconic and memorable block of course, but for his excellence in being part of the heart and soul of the Packers over so many NFL championship seasons in the critical time for the league, the late 50s through the 60’s.
And his book “Instant Replay”, chronicling that 1967 championship season (including the first Super Bowl) is one of the greatest sports books of all time IMO. Even if he were just a decent NFL guard, this book did so much for the popularity and growth of the NFL in the Lombardi era—maybe the most important era for the NFL—that he should get another shot at the Hall just for that. But no doubt, he deserved it anyway, without the book
The ambient temperature in Cincy was warmer that the ambient temp in GB. It was the wind chill factor in Cincy that made that game seem more brutal than the Ice Bowl. Still, watching the guys from sunny southern California freeze was something. I wish there was a dvd of the entire broadcast of the Ice Bowl. I’d buy it. Same thing for all the Super Bowls.
Oh, & BTW, GO COWBOYS!!!!! !
Just read an article stating Rogers has a severe case of the flu.
Not really, just made that up.
GO COWBOYS!
I'm a Seahawks fan; they'll beat either team.
One reporter said, “I’m going to have a bite out of my coffee”.
Packer backer from 1958 to this day. Wish I could say Bart Starr was my patron saint, but it’s actually Ray Nitschke.
;^)
True that, but I believe they've gotten back to their former selves.
We will welcome the Cowboys to Century-Link field, but getting past the Packers won't be easy.
BTW, I heard Romo broke his leg this morning.
I like you....you’re good, your’re real good. lol
I must confess, I have the highest of hopes this weekend....but, but, if my boyz tank, I am for the Seahawks all the way.
I remember the Ice Bowl, I was a child, but I actually went to the Fog bowl when the Bears beat the Eagles, worst game ever, couldn’t see anything after the second quarter.
I’m a die hard Eagles fan, saw the Cowboys play us at Franklin Field in the Early 60’s, I think it was the Cowboys first season. It was so damn cold. A guy sitting next to us had a small transistor radio. I thought he was listening until I saw him take the volume knob and unscrew it and take a big gulp.I said hey Dad he’s got soda in it, made my Dad laugh! I can’t remember who won. If the Cowboys get to the super bowl and are playing the Patriots I will root for them!
