But since most of their actual retail merchandise was generic, overpriced department store, mid-quality women and children's clothing and typical home accessory sundries...that marketing strategy was an epic failure!

Making a concerted politically motivated public outreach that mocks/derides over 90% of your entire former customer base, was not a particularly sound marketing strategy.
