I thought the idea was to call the present-day Republican Party the Whigs to imply that they were on the way out, just like the Whigs. There actually is a group out there already that calls itself the
Modern Whig Party.
And then there was the True Whig Party of Liberia: "Founded in 1869, the party dominated Liberian politics from 1878 until 1980 to the extent that the country was virtually a one-party state, although opposition parties were never outlawed." [Wikipedia]
