Interesting.

I haven't listened to Pat recently.

I'm more up on his '70s and '80s stuff.

To me, it seems like Mays is even more abstract and ethereal than Metheny is. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that Mays is the "grounded" one. If so, that's really something.

I may have said this before here, but I saw Pat Matheny back when no one knew who he was. In 1972 or so, when he was touring with Gary Burton. I saw them in Utica NY; I was a senior in high school. I remember thinking "who is that amazing guitar player?" I didn't learn until just recently (while looking up Gary Burton on Google) that that amazing guitar player was Pat Metheny when he was about 19 years old.
