Calvin Coolidge was the first to light a national Christmas tree. They were going to run electricity from the White House to the tree so Coolidge wouldn’t have to go out in the weather to do it. In classic Coolidge fashion he refused to waste the $500 taxpayer dollars and went out to light the tree in person.
