One of my husband s favorite sandwiches is peanut butter and a pickle on rye. Elvis Presley liked his peanut butter sandwiches with banana and bacon, and Hemingway liked thick onion slices in his. Ninety-four percent of American households have a jar on hand. The stuff lasts forever, so in a nuclear war situation you can always rely on it for sustenance. It can be stored safely unrefrigerated for two years.
I, on the other hand, have a love/hate relationship with it, and if I do ever eat it, I do so in the traditional manner, as a solo spread or with its mate, jelly! At other times, I abhor the stuff and, even when scrounging around for something to eat, will bypass it.
I had always thought that peanut butter was as American as apple pie and mom and was never eaten before we Americans took over from the British. Not true. It was actually an Aztec dish, but eaten as a paste, not a spread. I bet they didnt eat it with jelly either, or put it into their kids lunch boxes.

Seems odd to me that he is not as respected as he should be, when I was in school- 60s we were taught quite a bit about his contribution to agriculture and that was before there was such a thing as black history- it was just plain history.
Jif, Skippy, a whole raft of ersatz “peanut butter” aren’t worth the jars they’re packed in, and really ought not be allowed the term “peanut butter.” They are really more of a peanut flavored Crisco.
REAl peanut butter consists of finely ground peanuts and maybe a little salt. NOTHING MORE.
Arrowhead Mills makes a good smooth, and a brand called “Santa Cruz” is also pretty good.
Deaf Smith Brand was the best when it existed and Ox Heart was almost it’s equal in the Northeast markets. Sadly, both are gone.
But we need not settle for flavored hydrogenated vegetable oil.
My favorite brand of peanut butter is Laura Scudders. It’s been around since the 1950’s, but I think it’s local to California. I like peanut butter that consists of peanuts and salt, nothing else.
Peanut Butter--The Marathons (1961)
Hey, I remember that song, thanks for posting!
Right you are ‘bout avoiding partially hydrolyzed cottonseed oil that popular tasting comfort food brands of our childhood used.
Bad for the arteries, but OMG Jif, Skippy and Planters smelled and tasted So Good. Still nothing like it to this day...
BTW: I don’t know about others here - but for me, its hard to stop wolf’in down peanut butter spread on great bread. True that its got high protein. Unfortunately it very high in fat.
Speaking of which:
I’m working on making a backpacking trail bar made mostly of peanut butter because PB is so perfectly energy & nutritionally dense, ie.: 180+ cal per ounce.
Can’t wait to try the PB combos mentioned in this thread. Thanks!
Real clever idea!
I don’t like my teeth crunching into peanuts when it’s spread on a piece of bread. Jif works for me.
Neither do I. I like smooth PB.
But I don’t want a mouthful of hydrogenated vegetable oil, sugar or corn sweetener either.
I was lucky. I grew up on Ox Heart. Pure peanut butter par excellance. RIP.
Peanut butter, banana, and mayo sandwich..!!
The only PB I eat, is homemade. We take honey roasted Planters peanuts and grind ‘em up in our VitaMix to the consistency of our liking. Honey Roasted Peanut Butter. Yum! :-)
Yeah if you’re pregnant.
That’s true. He actually prayed to God to show him what to do with the peanut.
I take the chicken Top Ramen and change it to a Kung Pao Chicken type Ramen. Lets just say I like to fiddle with my Ramen.
Bummer.
Social convention says that, having developed an intolerance to peanut butter, one must relinquish/cede all his future shares to the general public - it's not optional...
I just knew that somebody was going to come along and ruin this thread by bringing in that horribly vile white concoction. This is the first disgusting combination anyone has brought up.
I did the same thing. Used to get Smuckers to avoid the hydrogenated oil but boy what a workout to get it well stirred. The no stir with palm oil is the best of both worlds.
Peanut butter and bacon cheeseburgers on a toaster bun are awesome!
