Apparently they were in an air-conditioned room, but one of the dogs chewed through the electric cord (with whatever consequences ensued for that dog) and the AC went off.
The place needed to be checked during the day, and perhaps several times; apparently they only checked once a day (or even at night) and so weren’t aware that the AC was off.
