USAF Thunderbirds to Perform Flyover for the Daytona 500: For the fifth straight year, the world-renowned U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will provide the flyover for the 57th annual DAYTONA 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season opener on Sunday, Feb. 22. The Thunderbirds, officially known as the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, will fly their signature "Delta" formation over the "World Center of Racing" during the finale of the national anthem for "The Great American Race." The Thunderbirds have visited Daytona International Speedway to perform the flyover for the DAYTONA 500 for the past five years. In addition, the Thunderbirds also provided the flyover in 2008 for the historic 50th running of the DAYTONA 500. "The flyover by the Thunderbirds is a signature moment in the pre-race festivities for the DAYTONA 500," Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. "We're proud and honored to be able to host this elite flying team and the thousands of race fans and the millions more watching on FOX Sports are looking forward to seeing them soar over Daytona International Speedway."
"We have a long-standing relationship with the Daytona 500," said LtCol Greg Moseley, the squadron's commander and lead pilot. "We're grateful to the Speedway for allowing us to share the Air Force story with race fans." The Thunderbirds feature six F-16 Fighting Falcons, the Air Force's premier multi-role fighter aircraft. Assigned to Air Combat Command, the squadron is composed of 12 officers and more than 100 enlisted Airmen serving in about 30 Air Force job specialties. Since the unit's inception in 1953, more than 350 million people in all 50 states and more than 60 countries have witnessed the distinctive red, white and blue jets in thousands of official aerial demonstrations. NC Supreme Court declines Bruton Smith's incentives appeal: Bruton Smith's $80 million legal fight against Cabarrus County may have run out of track. In a change of heart, the N.C. Supreme Court has declined to rule on the racing magnate's lawsuit that Cabarrus taxpayers owe him tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks for his racing complex in Concord. That decision marks Smith's third defeat in as many court trips dating back to 2012. The high court's ruling on Dec. 19, however, marks a bit of a reversal: The justices first agreed to hear Smith's challenge of a 2013 ruling by the state Court of Appeals to throw out Smith's suit. But after hearing arguments from both sides in September, the Supreme Court members changed their minds. That means the earlier court decision to throw out Smith's claims stands. The dispute arose in 2007 when Smith, one of racing's most powerful and controversial figures, announced plans to build a drag strip near his Charlotte Motor Speedway. The city of Concord objected, and Smith responded by threatening to move the speedway - and its $420 million annual impact on the local economy - and build the drag way elsewhere. Eventually, Cabarrus leaders wrote Smith a letter, committing to $80 million in tax breaks, grants and other public money to pay for speedway improvements. According to court documents, Smith called Mayor Bob Padgett that day and told him: "We have an agreement." It didn't hold up. Preliminary discussions focused on a combination of state, county and city money to pay for such infrastructure improvements as roads and noise control. Smith's drag strip opened in August 2008. The next day, the governments sent over a proposed contract that would have given them up to 40 years to make good on their $80 million pledge. Smith would have been required to complete $200 million of promised speedway improvements within three years. Smith and the speedway sued. The city settled with Smith for $2.8 million, but the track owner's fight with the county continued on through the state's top three courts. Smith's complaint accused the county of breach of contract and fraud, among other claims, while arguing that the 2007 letter from the local governments served as "a valid and enforceable contract."(Charlotte Observer)(12-25-2014)

Eddie Wood says team could go back to full time at some point: As Wood Brothers Racing begins its 65th year with Ford Motor Company, owner Eddie Wood says "It's not out of the question at all" that the team could go back to racing full time. Wood, a guest on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "The Morning Drive" on Tuesday, said the team's new alliance with a fellow Ford organization may mean more races for a group that has at least one NASCAR win in each of the last seven decades. "With this move over to Team Penske, there's a lot of people looking for extra races to get us back to the track more," Wood said. "I think if we have some success and just keep doing what we're doing, I think eventually we can get back full time." From 1985 to 2008, the Wood Brothers ran at least 28 races a season in NASCAR's premier series, and Wood said that's how he was raised in the sport. "When I started racing, we raced every race, every week," Wood said. "It was like that for years. Now that you've cut back a little bit, there is a life, but if you're us, your life is really at the race track so that's just the way it is."
Wood discussed how the team comes up with its current part-time schedule. "What we did is we get with our friends up at Motorcraft and Quick Lane and decide where they need us to go," Wood said. "Obviously the superspeedways (Daytona and Talladega), we've had some success there so there's four of them. "You're going to race at Michigan because that's home for Ford Motor Company. Who has the loudest fans? NASCAR or football? NASCAR has loud fans and even louder engines, but can it beat the "Beast Quake?" Football, NASCAR and their rowdy, roaring crowds faced off in a head-to-head battle this year to see which sport hits highest on the seismic charts, scientists reported Dec. 18 at the American Geophysical Union's annual meeting in San Francisco. Seattle Seahawks football fans have stomped their way to several "earthquakes," shaking the football stadium so hard that nearby seismometers register tremors. On Jan. 8, 2011, a 67-yard touchdown run resulted in a fan frenzy as powerful as a magnitude-2 quake, now known as the "Beast Quake." The rambunctious fans have also set a Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar.
Not to be outdone, this year the Texas Motor Speedway asked seismic experts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas to record the Duck Commander 500 race. It's a typical NASCAR race, with 43 stock cars roaring around a 1.5-mile track and twice the number of fans as a Seahawks game.
"The owner wanted to be able to say his race had larger ground motions than the Seattle Seahawks," joked Brian Stump, a seismologist at Southern Methodist University and co-leader of the project. More seriously, Stump and other scientists are interested in monitoring large crowds with seismic and acoustic signals transmitted through the earth and the air. And large structures such as stadiums, bridges and tunnels have natural frequencies that can change when something is amiss, such as unwanted cracks. As such, monitoring the vibrations is a way to detect unseen damage to these imposing structures.
On April 7, 2014 - a day late due to rain - a network of listening devices installed on volunteer time by Stump and his students and colleagues switched on both inside and outside the racetrack stadium. The instruments were set up to record everything from infrasound, or sound below human hearing, to explosion-level noise, and from earthquake-strength shaking to the weakest tremors. So who rocks hardest? It turns out it's not a fair contest.
"[NASCAR] is apples to oranges from a Seahawks game," Stump told Live Science. "It's a completely different phenomenon." The defining moments of a football game - touchdowns, interceptions, kickoffs and more - get fans on their feet in unison, creating a powerful force that rocks the stadium. But a NASCAR race is an endurance event, without much beyond crashes to bring the crowd together on their feet. No seismic signals came from the crowd during the race, Stump reported. Instead, the strongest vibrations were between 20 hertz to 100 hertz, five times higher in frequency than the signals seen at a Seahawks game, Stump said. These tremors came from the racecar engines, he said. Their deep bass rumbling made the ground vibrate, called acoustic-to-seismic coupling.(Yahoo Sports)(12-26-2014)

Jeff Gordon announced today that he was firing his entire pit crew.
This announcement followed Gordon ‘s decision to take advantage of President Obama’s stimulus scheme for employing Black Harlem teenagers. The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on how welfare drawing black street gangs from Harlem were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Gordon ‘s existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds with thousands of dollars’ worth of high tech equipment.
It was thought to be politically correct and a bold move by Gordon ‘s management team, as most races are won or lost in the pits.

UPDATE:
However, Gordon got more than he bargained for. At the crew’s first practice session, not only was the inexperienced black crew able to change all 4 wheels in under 6 seconds, but within 9 seconds they had repainted it, altered the VIN number, and sold the car to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., for 10 cases of Budweiser, a bag of weed and some photos of Jeff Gordon ‘s wife in the shower
