This is a small, common tragedy of black life that we don’t talk about: the best way for me to find success in my own country was to be immersed in a culture entirely different from my parents’ and adopt it as my own.

If I move to France, I will be expected to immerse myself in that culture and adopt it as my own.
If I move to Germany, I will be expected to immerse myself in that culture and adopt it as my own.
If I move to Japan, I will be expected to immerse myself in that culture and adopt it as my own.
...and they won't give me and my family 4-5 generations to do it in.
