The shells have been stored in a museum for 100 years, so how do we know someone hasn’t been messing around with them?

Usually, items stored in a museum are catalogued, so there should be a description verifying what the shells looked like 100 years ago to see if anything has changed.

...how do we know someone hasnt been messing around with them?If that was the case the scratches would be fresh rather than weathered?
