The shells have been stored in a museum for 100 years, so how do we know someone hasn’t been messing around with them?

Usually, items stored in a museum are catalogued, so there should be a description verifying what the shells looked like 100 years ago to see if anything has changed.

If that was the case the scratches would be fresh rather than weathered?
