I think it was a choice by John to show his dedication to his belief and not human material things of this world. I wonder if Jesus ever ate grasshoppers?
Jesus didn’t need to show his dedication to non-material things by fasting and so forth, since being He required no saving like the rest of us. I think the Pharisees used this to call him a glutton on at least one occasion.
