It seemed to me that what turned him nasty was his violent antipathy to 9/11 conspiracy theories, which was ironic, given that conspiracy theories were a staple of the show.
I didn't notice the death of Ramona having an effect, but he was never the same after the sexual molestation of his son by I think a high school teacher.
