God created whiskey so the Irish would not rule the world.

About 20 years ago I applied for job at the city water department, I had recently retired from the Army, and was all dressed up the way I was taught in suit and tie, I had experience with water purification and all sorts of water pumps, I was rejected, but one thing stuck in my head about the interview, the interviewer told me “you look like a lawyer”.

Since social drinking is an integral part of that culture, maybe they’re just afraid of getting shown up?

“South Korea pretty much celebrates drunkeness”
Perhaps around US Military bases.
Otherwise South Koreans aren’t any different than Americans.

Pot, kettle, black. Soju anyone?
To: driftdiver
I should have made it clearer. They certainly seem to celebrate it in their media.

They need the old Gaelic songs to go along with their soju-drinking.

yeah, eat enough kimchee and no one can tell how much you drink. Plus, their garlic intake is off the scales.
To: Olog-hai
Yes, if the stories about their youth passing out in the streets due to overindulgence in soju arent exaggerating. They are not, and it's not just the youth. I once walked past a corpse frozen to death in the street one early morning on my way to work In Daegu-- a few too many during a nasty cold snap.

South Korea is really struggling with the concept of political correctness.
Thank God somebody is... :)

Indeed so. For only the USA has problems with racism and bigotry after all . . . the rest of the world is utterly guiltless in that regard, right? It took Coca-Cola over 60 years to become accepted in Japan. Although it's presence was tolerated, people simply wouldn't buy it.

I worked for a very large Korean semiconductor firm for two years.
I have never seen a bigger group of drunks in my life. My Korean co-workers would work for 12 hours, then drink heavily after work for another 4+ hours - every. single. day. And boy did they love their cigarettes!
I was young then and I could certainly “party”. But if I kept up with them I would have been dead in a week.

I like SPAM too
Yes, they even sell SPAM gift sets in SK. I understand that a good gift for visiting people would be a watermelon or a fruit basket, probably because fruit can be pretty expensive in that country. If a newly married couple gets an apartment an appropriate housewarming gift would be large containers of laundry soap or such.
Useful, for sure.
