"Obama made lots of conservatives overly pessimistic. I've seen many posters in the last few years who've seemed more interested in living under the whim and ukase of a former KGB Colonel than living in the USA. They've berated elections and democracy as if they were completely ignorant of what life is like when the rule of law and self government are gone."
elhombrelibre, I agree with your general sentiment of over pessimism. I also agree that there is still a HUGE difference between America and countries like North Korea, and many in Africa.
However, your reference to "rule-of-law"(ROL) is very important. It is one of the most important fundamental underpinnings of America and her success. Yet Obama and recent years have shown that the respect for ROL in this country is at an all-time low. The election of many republicans yesterday was a rejection of Obama's pathetic universal health care implementation, a rejection of his economic policies leading to joblessness, and a rejection of his cowering international policies leading to millions of homeless in the mid-east.
Unfortunately, the ROL still has gained no respect. Under rule of law Obama, the son of foreigners, cannot even be president. When secretaries of state, and attorney generals fail to enforce the law even when demanded by official legal proceedings, on a matter of the utmost importance. Then the unlawful leader we elect proceeds at every turn to ignore the rule of law and commit crimes while nothing is done about it. What can we say about ROL in America under such circumstances?
Pessimism? America may not have fallen yet, but we pulled out one key pillar of her support ROL, and every other pillar is under attack.

Keep in mind that Obama’s lack of respect for the rule of law is yet another big reason why he and his fellow Democrats were beaten badly. That should give us at least a modicum of comfort. Calling everyone in our great republic “sheeple” and other names, as was done in the original post, is just silly. Yes, Obama fooled many Americans for too long, but the days when he could get away with it are gone. This is a huge win if people look at the outcome. Best regards.
