The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Happy “blustery fall” Sunday OTR fans.

An early thread today as I'll be away but do expect to be back about showtime.

Tonight's lineup looks great. The classics to new shows like Frank Merriwell and Information Please...to a fantastic 10pm hour with the Whistler (it's been too long for one of these) and Mysterious Traveler.

I can hear my windows being pressured by the wind.

How's it going out there...

Frank Merriwell is new to me, so looked it up.

Sponsored by Dr. West’s Tooth Paste. Looked that up, and came across this link to notes about popular radio premiums. You'd think Dr. West would have the leggy model flashing a white toothy smile.

Sponsor Promotions Popular With Radio Listeners Part II

(The back button goes up to more links on Golden Age advertising - Part I, hits, misses, complaints, etc.)

We had turtles, albeit long after Dr. West's promotion. Mom flushed them because they suddenly "died" when she found out turtles can carry salmonella...

Good point — I get hung up on that “golden” expense account vs “two hundred dollars a day....plus expenses”

Hi, Vision. What did you do today? That was a very early ping.

We’re having a fire in the back yard in our little fire bowl. It’s the nice thing about the cooler weather. Pork ribs on the grill, laundry in the dryer.

Very good!

We have our Grace radio wired to speakers in and out of the house, so we’re always listening outside.

One day, I have to try some Food Wishes recipes. Time and money, and I’m there!

Yeah, tar and feather is bad news—we can’t imagine—but the jerk learned his lesson and showed he wasn’t too much of jerk in the end.

If you ever watch the HBO John Adams series, there's a scene where Sam Adams is allowing a crowd to do it. It's a brutality that's hard to conceptualize in modern times.
