Sounds like pilot error. Were he skilled, he coulda likely survived a controlled crash.
NTSB report mentions his unfamiliarity with the aircraft, the improper fuel selector, its placement in an awkward spot, and the improper fueling i.e. he estimated what he had onboard and was wrong.
