It's octagon, not "hex". Caliber might give a clue to its years manufactured and its value too.

.30-30 common. .25-35, .32-55, .32-40 and .32 Winchester Special, less common. Carbines: common. Rifles much less common.

And so on.

One of my brothers has my Dad’s .32 Winchester Special that was manufactured in 1907.
