Smooth jazz star Kenny G insisted Thursday he’s not a foreign provocateur supporting Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests, after Beijing signaled its displeasure over his inharmonious visit and repeated concerns about meddling by external forces.

The American musician created a stir when he tweeted Wednesday about his visit to the semiautonomous southern Chinese city, where thousands of student-led protesters have occupied streets for more than three weeks to press their demands for greater democratic reforms. …

But he did show a knack for connecting to the basest impulses of the large crowd by deploying his two or three most effective licks (holding long notes and playing fast runs - never mind that there were lots of harmonic clams in them) at the key moments to elicit a powerful crowd reaction (over and over again).

Kenny G plays for a general audience. Metheny performs for jazz lovers. Comparing Kenny G to Metheny is like comparing Rachmaninoff to Hindemith - one is immediately accessible, whereas the other can be an acquired taste.

Metheny is a real musician with the God-given gifts that make for recognizable excellence.

Kenny is without those gifts, and it shows.
