They hired a new president who couldn't stand to live in a small town. He commuted everyday from Des Moines.
The UAW ran the plant and had actually a dozen union stewards (three or four on every shift.) They were highly paid but did nothing but bitch. This lead to an awful labor-management condition. Even when the guys on the line saw a mistake, they wouldn't say anything.
For a time, Maytag owned the Hoover vacuum line sold in Europe. A poorly written ad for the UK offered a grand prize two week vacation to Paris in a drawing. A judge ruled that EVERYONE who bought a Hoover was to be given the two weeks in Paris...
