They didn't use Windows 9, because poor coding in older applications could catch Windows 95 & Windows 98 instead of the intended OS.

For instance, if someone wrote a script to search for Windows 9 machines:

get-adcomputer -filter {osname -like "Windows 9*"}

They'll wind up getting Windows 95 and 98 machines as well. Microsoft didn't want this, so they skipped to 10.

Of course, this does nothing about the 30 year old applications looking for Windows 1.x!

well then windows 10 could reallybe in troubleif it catches windows 1.0 bugs. we’ll be back to DOS and the 640k limit. and being asked to insert our 5 1/4 floppy #7...
