I spent Mar till July recovering from an encounter with a pit bull. I was walking my Great Dane when we encountered a Pit Bull off the leash. I was able to keep the dogs apart (my Dane was on a leash) but I wound up severing all four tendons in my right hand from the stress place on the hand. Most painful and lengthy recovery I’ve ever had including two neck fusions and a shoulder repair. As my surgeon said, I’ve lived an active life.
We’ve given up on walking our dogs since no one seems to follow the leash laws.
I carry a spray bottle of pure ammonia with me when I go on walks. Would rather carry a loaded pistol ... but you make do with whatcha got! Someone told me once that he sprayed a pitbull (it was behind an adjacent fence and a constant nuisance) just ONCE and the thing never barked or snarled or even bothered with him again.
Is your Great Dane doing okay?
Sorry to hear about your hand, a miracle you were able to keep the dogs apart.
The size of a Dane and a the ferociousness of a pitbull getting into it wouldn’t be pretty.
I confess that if I were in a neighborhood where there was a risk of someone having a potentially dangerous dog, I’d walk with a little league aluminum bat (I actually have one). Any attacking dog gets it first to the head. Both hands. Swinging to kill.
I have the bat because where I live we go for walks in the moonlight and there are lots of wild animals, including coyotes.

Just shoot the dogs. I say that as a dog owner.
It would be a shame if you "caved" and gave up on your walks like that.
Ever consider arming yourself for your strolls?
Lead is also effective against two-legged varmints.
Regards,
We live in a nice upscale neighborhood and I always felt safe from pitt bulls, no one around here kept them. then a while back I was driving on our street and saw a man walking a very large, solid white pitt bull on a strong leash.
I stopped to talk to him and he said the pitt was a rescue and seemed to be quite aggressive. . He didn’t say vicious but that is what I surmised.
I didn’t know the man but I wondered (and didn’t ask) what he was thinking by keeping that dog.
Sorry to hear you were injured.. Hope you are doing better now.
I had a similar incident.. Fortunately, the pit was not able to get ahold of my Border Collie/ Sheltie mix. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.
