I have noticed that commercial eggs have thinner shells, and it probably has to do with how they are raised. We let ours free range during the day and coop them up at night to keep away predators. We just feed them the layer pellets that you buy at Tractor Supply or Rural King. Nothing special. They do get goodies like tomato or apple cores or watermelon a few times a week. That makes them incredibly happy ;) We get about 8 eggs a day...that adds up fast!
I’d keep a few chickens except that our rental agreement forbids livestock. Maybe if I claimed they were pets?
