Recently, a small firestorm was ignited by Valerie Lucus-McEwen, a government Emergency Management employee, who had the temerity to accuse preparedness types of selfishness. While your immediate reaction may be as mine certainly was Are people really and truly this thoughtless? this question does deserve a proper answer, particularly as those who are easily influenced by the leftist media, or who believe the state really and actually is the omniscient, omnipotent savior of our personal and corporate lives, are actually asking this question. So, lets examine the issue:
First, many preparedness types have, as part of their goal, the intent of helping neighbors and family who were unable or unwilling to prepare. In my own case, part of what I have in mind is assisting a large group of mentally retarded and Downs syndrome children that my church has taken under its wing. (A group the state would do no more than warehouse if it were under their direction!). Not all preppers feel this way, but I would bet my bottom can of stored tuna fish there is an exceedingly large percentage of preparedness types who feel similarly.

I always thought that one plus for first responders is that every resource be it manpower, food and supplies that they do not have to supply to a prepper is that much more they have to supply those in need.
Preppers’ PING!!
I have had a number of FReepers complain that preppers’ are selfish, though I have never grasp how wanting to take care of me and mine and NOT depend on the Government to do it is being selfish.
I bet those FReepers won’t share with the low life Obamabots when SHTF.
Thanks for all your good work, Kart.
Or even not adding to the stress on the local market buying cases of water, bread, etc. when others could use it.
Years ago we had a bad snow-storm with power out for a large suburban area for ten days. I walked to the store once. For marshmallows to roast in the fireplace. (They had plenty of them. Other stuff - not so much.)
More accurately, “non-collectivist”.
Someone never got the point of “the ant and the grasshopper” story
Being prepared is being responsible. I don’t understand how someone equates being responsible to being selfish.
Exactly1 And being prepared is being considerate. Preppers would not be a burden on others. The unprepared would be a burden on others.
Well, then those so-called freepers are as foolish as the day is long. Failing to prepare for the very real possibility of disaster is utter insanity.
Electricity can be out for weeks at a time due to hurricanes and heavy snowstorms. Water can become contaminated for extended periods of time as well. Forrest fires, mudslides, etc.,... the list of natural disasters that occur with relative frequency are many.
Then there are those intenitionally made disasters like terrorist attacks, riots, pandemics, etc., that seem increasingly likely to be on the horizon.
How about the subsequent looting? A store owner should just keep all his merchandise on display in the window and stay home to watch the news?
And if the gov’t is that all powerful, all knowing, all generous, altruistic entity some believe, the fact that preppers prep will have no effect whatsoever on anyone else’s outcome.
Regards,
If some are prepared and others aren’t it just ain’t “fair”
lolz
“selfishness”
Expanded, another Demo-Orwell moment:
“We must remember the selfless sacrifice of Comrade Ogilvy, winner of the ‘Unprepper Hero’ medal knowing that the State provides all, and dedicate our essence to drinking that last cup of kool-aid, if Big Bro’ determines that act serves the greater good.”
There is a Korean music video with that theme but their moral was that the ant needs to get out more. lol.
The Grasshopper Song - Sunny Hill and yes, it is strange
I like their other video called Midnight Circus a lot though
Any idiot that proclaims a prepper is selfish is just projecting the anger at their own inadequacy and procrastination on others.
A huge idea of being prepped is to take care of yourself and take care of your family. It’s about being adult and responsible and oddly, the irresponsible seem to think that they should be coddled and taken care of by the responsible all the time, no matter the consequences.
We all have to take care of ourselves and our families; as single adults, it’s our job to look after ourselves and take care of ourselves.
I was raised a Boy Scout. I learned the motto well.
Exactly.
All about taking care of the feckless, not the genuinely helpless.
“Selfish”? Turn off the electric & gas to your home, cut up your credit cards, and see how many days (hours?) it takes to learn what “selfish” really is.
Unless, of course, you’re properly prepared. In that case, handing out support to the needy remains possible.
And being prepared is being considerate. Preppers would not be a burden on others. The unprepared would be a burden on others.
