I remember in the 60s in New York (and other places, I believe), we had Lafayette Radio Electronics. The best part about them was they had a huge catalog full of stuff - and the catalog was free! I bought my Dad a portable transistor radio for his birthday from them; he loved that little radio.

I bought an FM radio at the Lafayette in Yonkers, so I could listen to a classical station. So many things in that store, so little money in my pocket.
