For those who are misled, confused, not paying attention, or hiding their heads in the sand I will endeavor to make this as simple as it is true.
Question: Why are westerners fighting for ISIS/ISIL/IS?
Subtext: How are they able to recruit so many Muslims from so many places?
Answer:
A. They promised a modern caliphate would be established, and
B. They declared a caliphate was in place in the land liberated from the worshipers of the cross by Khalid and Abu Obaidah.
It is the Islamic prophetic promise fulfilled. It is the great commission of the prophet brought to fruition. This, a caliphate ruling with impunity and without political or financial dependence on the infidels, is the answer to prayer for millions of Muslims around the world. This is not about striking back, or righting wrongs (real or perceived). This is about crushing the infidels, ruling by the law of the prophet, and raising the flag of Allah in victory.

I am often somewhat less than humble in my opinions, but in this case I make no jokes or self depreciation about the matter.
This is the simple, basic and yet completely correct answer.
Any solution, political or military, that does not accept this truth as reality is doomed to failure.
Just like USA citizens are convinced to vote for democRATS. They are either uninformed, insane or evil. The end results are the same for honest workers and basically honest countries that get the consequences from these leftists.

they have some pretty darn good marketing stuff on you tube. I remember watching one a few months ago and listing off the ways they made it sound like heaven to join them.
For non-believers, they often use sexual relationship and drugs to get them.
What is the difference between a moderate Muslim, and a radical? The moderate Muslim doesn’t have a caliphate yet.
Aren’t there already 57 muslim countries?
