Did they kill the tree, or was it just loose bark like on a hickory tree? If they killed the tree, the proper punishment would be 3 hours of biology lessons (about trees, of course) and a follow-up test, and then planting and caring for 30 new trees.
If they just pulled a loose bark off, they should be rewarded for keeping the school grounds clean.

If that's the case, then screw'em - we have too many vandals.
But we don't know if someone over-reacted, or if they actually did bark it all the way around. I can't see barking it all the way around as being anything but vandalism.
