Forbes Magazine made this observation:

Yankovic is a savvy businessman, with a three-decade track record of persuading better-known artists to let him adapt their work.

Just as Weird Al copies other people’s ideas and builds on them, you can copy his strategies to grow your own business.

There are three main types of growth: differentiation, replication and appropriation. Most of the time, we talk about differentiation, where firms create new products and seek out new markets. The second type, replication, seeks growth through copying existing business models and products; franchising is the most common example.

The third type of growth, appropriation — this is where Weird Al comes in — uses strategic alliances and partnerships to generate value through new products and new markets, using others’ skills and resources.

Weird Al, has promoted his career by seeking approval from every musician he spoofs. In other words, he BUILDS on the success of others while creating his own MARKET NICHE.

He’s not desperate to go on the Superbowl and he doesn’t need it.

Thirty years of success in the business proves that his system works.

I was a DJ in DC in 1979-1980 and my station aired Dr. Demento. Weird Al had just come out with “My Bologna” (My Sharona by The Knack) It was our #1 requested song for weeks.

That is what I like about Weird Al. He has written many parody songs and always sends them to the original artist to get their approval before releasing them to the public.

For a guy with some serious writing talent and mediocre singing talent, carefully packaged for a "market niche," he really is a smart, savvy, businessman - with lots of respect for the very people and business that he parodies!
