There are three main types of growth: differentiation, replication and appropriation. Most of the time, we talk about differentiation, where firms create new products and seek out new markets. The second type, replication, seeks growth through copying existing business models and products; franchising is the most common example.
The third type of growth, appropriation this is where Weird Al comes in uses strategic alliances and partnerships to generate value through new products and new markets, using others skills and resources.
Weird Al, has promoted his career by seeking approval from every musician he spoofs. In other words, he BUILDS on the success of others while creating his own MARKET NICHE.
