I know of ELO and ELP. Was there an ELM too?
Nassau Coliseum in NY 1978. I saw them in Boston about 3 nights later. Keith Emerson absolutely destroyed a Hammond B3 that night. By destroyed, I mean he lifted it up and slammed it on the stage several times until it was reduced to kindling. What a mad man.
Saw them in Baltimore in ‘78, great show until my date barfed all over my pants (Mateus wine victim # 5023).
BTW, I’ve always been on the correct side of the contro — Trilogy or Tarkus — and Trilogy is still preferred. I still enjoyed them when I saw them live, on the ill-starred “Works” tour after they’d had to dump the orchestra. We were on Keith’s end of the stage, what a show all on his own!

Good stuff. The live versions are much better than the track they used on the Manticore set.
Great music. Still have much of their discography on the iPod. Trilogy was a fantastic album.

Keith Emerson was pretty much great.
I came back to my dorm one night after partying with my German friends; I was singing “Jerusalem” fairly loud, I’m told. Couldn’t hit the high notes for “nor shall my sword sleep in my hand” like Greg Lake.
I always liked the beginning of this song. Pure beauty.

As an “old” Navy guy...this one was my favorite from ELP. All the guys got their shots (Keith, Gregg, and Carl) and they used an orchestra too. The visuals aren’t bad. If you have 13 minutes it’s worth it.

I guess one of the reasons I like this is I remember being back on the old FF-1075 when we went into Ceuta Spain (other side - tip of Africa) and came in on a Sunday morning to refuel. The Captain granted liberty and advised that only some of the shops would be open and only a bar or two...one at the top of the hill a few blocks away. I (being the Supply Officer) had to hang around and pay the fuel providers once the Engineers figured out how much we actually got...so even though we were supposed to have a “partner” on liberty I told my assistant to go ahead...I could find the bar easily enough on my own.
When I did get there it sounded pretty rowdy. “Ladies” (probably whores) were sitting out front and then our Chief Master at Arms (ship’s cop - an E-6 for our small ship) walked out the front of the bar - tilted up a beer - finished it - and threw the bottle straight up in the air as far as he could. It was a great throw - he was on the ship’s softball team and we were good. Wow I thought...this is a party! I found my assistant John and got a shot and a beer to catch up. We had been out for like 28 days independent steaming on anti-sub duties so the guys were ready to bust out.
Well you can imagine the rest...we left port two hours late the next morning (after herding everybody up) and the Captain received a stern message from CINCLANT. The old USS TRIPPE was banned from going into Ceuta again ;^)
Captain was pissed...but he got over it. I doubt if it hurt his career.
Cool. That would have been an L100 not B3. Emerson’s first organ was an L100. In early days he would haul it around for gigs. After he got established he bought a C3 and still used the L100 to trash around. The L100 is what you saw and he would lean it over, throw it around, plant a knife into it and do his theatrics such as almost carrying it on his back. After each gig his tech would attempt to put it back together. :-) A job far worse than Hendrix’s tech.
The first ELP show I saw was in 1972. I had heard Lucky Man and assumed they were an acoustic act. Somehow got tickets for row 4 and was shocked when I saw this monster synth. They performed entire Tarkus album back when it was fresh and played at correct tempo just like the album. Also saw them in 1973 when Trilogy came out and in 1974. We were lucky to see them in their prime
Awesome. I love Trilogy. Still my favorite album.
