Severed Snake Head Kills Chef Cooking Cobra Soup

Chinese chef Peng Fan died after the severed head of a spitting cobra bit him 20 minutes after being cut off

A chef cooking a soup dish from cobra flesh died in China after he was bitten by the snake's head – 20 minutes after it was cut off.

Peng Fan was preparing the rare Asian delicacy from the Indochinese spitting cobra when the snake's severed head bit him with venom as he was throwing it into the bin, The Mirror reported.

Peng died before he could be treated in hospital with life-saving anti-venom, police said.

"It is a highly unusual case, but it appears to be just an accident," a police spokesman said. "He prepared the snake himself and was just unlucky.

"There was nothing that could be done to save the man. Only the anti-venom could have helped, but this was not given in time. It was just a tragic accident."

Diners who were eating in the restaurant at the time of the incident described screams coming from the kitchen.

Lin Sun, 44, who was dining with his wife Su said: "We were in the restaurant having a meal for my wife's birthday when suddenly there was a lot of commotion.

"We did not know what was happening but could hear screams coming from the kitchen. There were calls for a doctor in the restaurant but unfortunately by the time medical assistance arrived, the man had already died. After we heard that we did not continue with our meal."

According to snake expert Yang Hong-Chang, all reptiles can function for up to an hour after losing their body parts.

"It is perfectly possible that the head remained alive and bit Peng's hand," he said. "By the time a snake has lost its head, it's effectively dead, as basic body functions have ceased, but there is still some reflexive action.

"It means snakes have the capability of biting and injecting venom even after the head has been severed."

It makes sense to me that you could move your tongue, jaw and eyes after a guillotine or sword beheading. The brain would still be receptive to a touch on the spinal canal and I think you would be receptive to auditory sounds also. Only when the loss of oxygen in the blood cells went too far down would the brain shut down.

“It is perfectly possible that the head remained alive and bit Peng’s hand,” ...I JUST saw, less than an hour ago, a TV show where they had eyegoggles on and were handling spitting cobras and had NO fear of being bitten. Who’s mistaken here?

I have heard that a snake could still bite you after you killed it. So I am careful to pulverize the snakes head as part of the killing.

If the authorities don’t mind you preparing this dish in your kitchen (where venom could possibly contaminate other dishes), then why the restriction on antivenum?

From what I understand, antivenom needs very special handling to stay effective. I don’t think it can be kept very long.

A lot of evidence points to those people being able to function for 20-30 seconds after.

If you do a search on that stuff, you’ll get some articles. One I remember talked about a guy getting done in by the guillotine and after the doctor picking up the head. First the eyes were real wide and looking for the body, and he blinked when asked questions, as in can you hear me etc.

He was responsive for a bit, then the eyes glazed over in death.

I for one am not anxious to find out, so I’ll be doing my best to keep it attached, and those around me. However, if it comes down to it, and it’s that or renounce God, I’ll take the loss of my head.

Um... Can I get this to go?

Just think...asking for a doggy bag might've netted them a whole 'nother meal...
