As of April 17, 2014, a sequel was in development at Fox 2000. Columbus and Williams were both expected to return, and the Elf movie screenwriter David Berenbaum is writing the script.

On August 11, 2014, Robin Williams died, drawing speculation that the project may be cancelled.
